Children and Housing Introduction

This section of the site covers the use of the Children Act 1989 as a safety net for homeless children and their families who are not able to obtain housing assistance the Housing Act 1996 - the usual route for homeless persons to follow. There are some serious gaps in the safety net which the Housing Act 1996 is supposed to provide. For children and their families who fall through these gaps the Children Act 1989 can act as an important second safety net.

People trying to make use of this second safety net will often receive a negative and even hostile response from council staff. This is often because those staff have not been trained to recognise the need for housing assistance to be provided under Children Act 1989. This site will hopefully assist those trying to access support and also those who are being asked to provide it.
